Extracting text from screenshots: 4 methods
Short answer
For one or two images, Live Text is enough. Past a few dozen, the problem is no longer extraction but where the text goes.
- Live Text — open the screenshot, long-press the words, select and copy.
- If nothing selects, check Settings → General → Language & Region → Live Text.
- Translate works on recognized text in place, which is useful for foreign-language captures.
- Recognition usually fails for one of three reasons: small type, low contrast, or cropped edges.
1. Live Text — fastest, one image at a time
Open the screenshot in Photos and long-press on the text. Selection handles appear; drag them and copy. The text-recognition button in the lower corner makes every string on screen selectable at once.
- Works for copy, translate, look up, and tapping phone numbers, addresses and links directly.
- Does not do batches, and does not put the text anywhere for you.
If nothing selects, turn Live Text on in Settings → General → Language & Region.
3. When the capture is in another language
Select the recognized text and choose Translate. If you need the whole page translated, translating in Safari before capturing gives a much cleaner result than translating the image afterwards.
4. Tools that extract and file automatically
Once you are past a few hundred screenshots that keep arriving, extraction is the easy half. Check three things before trusting a tool with them.
- Where processing happens — on the device, or uploaded to a server. Screenshots contain conversations, addresses and payment screens, so this matters more here than almost anywhere else.
- Whether the source survives — can you jump from an extracted sentence back to the screenshot it came from?
- Whether you can export — Markdown, CSV, JSON. Without export, everything you organize is locked in that app.
When the text will not come out
